Trans Spenser

featuring Colby Gordon and Kit Heyam.

Thursday 14 December 2023, 11.30am PST / 2.30pm EST / 7.30pm GMT on Zoom

In this session we will explore teaching Spenser with two leading scholars of early modern gender identity and Trans Studies, Colby Gordon and Kit Heyam. We will ask how to approach The Faerie Queene in a fully Trans-inclusive way, sharing practical strategies for making our classrooms welcoming to all. Spenser’s epic is a particularly rich site for discussion of a full range of gender identities, including Trans, non-binary and genderqueer characters and plotlines. We will discuss not only the poem’s multiple and various engagements with ideas of gender but also the way in which it provides a place in which we can give our students room to explore their own identities, as we seek to create classrooms in which we can all be our full selves.

The session will include discussion, sharing of resources and the chance to ask questions.

Please note that the event is a Trans-inclusive, safe space and that moderators will ensure this commitment is upheld.
