Club Mission Statement

Our club is a scholarly student-run extension of the Medieval and Early Modern Studies Program of UC Davis. We fervently support the academic study of the classical medieval periods of various nations across the globe and are enthusiastically passionate about promoting the love for and spreading the knowledge of the eon from the fall of the Roman Empire to the end of the Baroque era which witnessed the rise of the intellectual, political, and cultural forces that shape modern western society today—the bridge connecting the ancient civilizations of Greece, Rome, and the Middle East with modern times; the glorious classical dynasties of China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam in East Asia; the mysterious epochs of the Inca and the Maya in the Americas; the golden ages of medieval India such as the Pallava dynasty, Rashtrakuta Empire, and Mughal Empire; etc. We revel within the edifying richness of these worldwide cultures and their interactions during a period of tremendous exchange, both confrontational and cooperative. We wholeheartedly foster the interdisciplinary study of history, political science, music, literature, philosophy, art, theater, religion, economics, classics, law, architecture, science, medicine, biology, etc. with regard to the enchanting medieval world. Furthermore, we also ardently promote the study of medieval languages, for example Greek, Latin, Sanskrit, Middle High German, Middle English, Classical Japanese, Classical Chinese, etc. Most importantly, we always strive towards making this club a fantastic interdepartmental, transnational, cross-cultural, borderless cosmopolitan federation of world literature and culture championing the philomathic vigor (好學精神【かうがくせいしん: kōgaku seishin】) and polymathic spirit (博學精神【はくがくせいしん: hakugaku seishin】) of the Renaissance man. May this club be a new World Republic of Letters—UC Davis's novel bastion of philomátheia (φιλομάθεια: “the love of learning”) and polymátheia (πολυμάθεια: “the universality of learning”)!
